Chinaman wrote:You know one of crickets great assets is it's unpredictability. Chasing down 500 is hardly commonplace even in this day and age. Many people seem to over analyse a game that has so many interesting twists and turns, the long game that is. Often a perceived error of judgement can turn a game on its head  for the better, sometimes the worst. You can nit pick over tactics and Burns, like many, captains by numbers while relying on his players to deliver,  but this game was a classic in anyone's book. Criticise if you must, but I think your being a bit harsh.
To be honest do we really need a specialist spinner?  Not that we've got one anyway. We didn't last year and have not done so far this year. I'd love to see more spin, but for the last 18 months or so it really hasn't been required.

500 is not commonplace. 350 is not unusual. What is also worth noting is how many matches are drawn by teams batting through the last day, often without any danger of losing, which again points to pitches which offer no assistance to spinners (or anyone else) and/or spinners without the skills to exploit it. A bit of chicken and egg there, of course but I wish a way could be found to encourage spinners without going all Ciderabad from day one.

On a lighter note, I wonder whether there has ever been an innings where the disparity between centuries in terms of balls faced has been as great as that between Sibley's and Smith's? Where's Andy Salzman when you need him?

Thanks for flagging. I also like most of the cost being donated to the Dravet charity.

The merchandise on offer after last year’s title was poor. People like wearing leisure wear carrying the word ‘champions’.
As Guildford says, this is a fine initiative to fund Dravet

so having been on holiday for a couple of weeks, and deciding not to post whilst away (but obviously keeping up with the scores), I came back to read this thread, which ranges from 'what are Kent doing in the 1st Div' to 'how are we losing to this lot, we are rubbish' to 'what a win which will go a long way to us regaining the title'

does no one realise that cricket is an 'up and down game' and that when you have the opposition at 40-5 you are still not guaranteed a win, nor are you guaranteed to lose when you give away such a big 1st innings deficit

In saying all of that though, it was a great win and totally unexpected when I checked my phone towards the middle of day 4.

He comes across as a nutcase if you read his "numbers" column inside the back cover of WCM.

In media it often helps to have a Unique Selling Point and coming across as slightly (but safely) deranged may be his. Quite likely he is deliberately exaggerating traits that were already there. I suspect that Brian Johnston and Henry Blofield did something similar with their personalities. Once you have got that image then of course you play up to it (like Geoffrey Boycott).

Maybe posters on forums do this as well sometimes!
