Didn’t Tim struggle to get into the First Team at Surrey or was given Limited Opportunities.

I seem to remember him taking a five for against Leics, but he wasn’t a regular

Re: TIM MURTAGH ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT
I can remember not expecting much from the signing of an all rounder who was in and out at Surrey. How wrong I was! I think moving was the making of him and he became an expert at outswing and using it to set up an lbw. There is no guarantee he would have developed like that at Surrey without being a regular so I would not see him as one who got away. All counties can tell stories like that
Unfortunately his batting went in the other direction but not before he and TRJ had hit five successive sizes at Scarborough.
He will most certainly be missed ... but as he will be a coach Ican just see him pulling on the whites in an injury crisis. At The Oval maybe?

My recollection is that he seemed to get wrongly pigeonholed as a limited overs specialist due to not bowling express pace. He was also a decent number 8 or 9 batsman, who could score quickly, and a sharp outfielder.Jhe10077 wrote:Didn’t Tim struggle to get into the First Team at Surrey or was given Limited Opportunities.
I've just checked the yearbook for his final season with Surrey, in 2006. He was the only player to play all 27 matches across the three limited overs competitions (50, 40 and 20 overs) but played just 2 matches in our Division 2 championship winning campaign. His final appearance was in the last Championship match at Derby, when he opened the bowling in each innings (2/82 & 2/16) and scored 41* batting at 8, in a 5 wickets victory.
I always thought it odd that his batting withered completely at Middlesex, to the point where he was a confirmed number 11 who rarely seemed to make more than single figure scores.

On commentary Gus Fraser has made it pretty clear that Murtagh decided a few years back that he didn't want to get hit, so, get out of the line and swing. He was a decent bat for the first 75 of his years at Middlesex.
