New Signings For 2023 - Page 2 Empty Re: New Signings For 2023

Seem to remember that Murali couldn’t bat but managed to take over 800 Test wickets. Not talking about wicketkeepers!! Why should spinners have to able to bat but not seamers??! No one has provided an answer to that question!!! Play The only criticism of Virdi and Moriarty is that they can’t bat. But how can Steel be classified as a bowler when he has taken 28 wickets in 6 seasons ,less wickets than Moriarty took last season at a considerably better average. It seems to me that this is Batty logic no rational logic.

Virdi and Moriaty were never going to get a game this season. The reason being the side had a 4/5 pronged excellent superb seam attack that consistently bowled sides out. The Oval pitches particularly were made to measure for this and we've won the Championship. Jack's and Steel provided occasional spin which was hardly needed. It's a shame for these two but completely logical from Batty. There simply is no argument. And look around the counties, how many wickets were taken by spinners this summer apart from Harmer, albeit no cricket in August didn't help. If I were Virdi and Moriaty I'd be looking elsewhere now because with the new young guy signing up I don't see them playing. Tough I know, but that's the game sometimes.

Seem to remember that we won the CC with Virdi playing. Wasn’t a requirement to be able to bat until Batty. Why should Majid get anymore playing time under Batty tha the other 2!

It's a long time ago but I think Keith Andrew was unusual even then. The Arnold Longs and Jimmy Binkses of this world could contribute a few. Then you had a few like J T Murray who were middle order standard and the odd Jim Parks who were better than that (Parks of course being preferred to Murray by England because of his batting).

Quite a few counties seem to toss the gloves around between two or three batsmen (all of whom are in the side) these days. The decline in spin in the CC is one factor. I think one day cricket, and T20 in particular, has led to, shall we say, a re-evaluation of the need for a specialist keeper and part of that has tipped over into the CC as well. Hopefully the art will not be downgraded completely because at its best (Simpson standing up to Murtagh yesterday) it can be electrifying.

He may well not if we use similar tactics next season. But our spinners now, like it or not, are Jacks (when available), Steel and I expect Majid who looked promising in the ODC. Don't see Virdi or Moriaty getting a look in, even if they are still here unless pitches are all turners.

Neither Jacks nor Steel are quality and spinners by a long chalk, Steel has taken 28 wickets at 36 runs per wicket Jacks has taken any more.Majid can’t bat so he won’t play. All the opposition has to do is prepare turning wickets and we will be stuffed with that attack!! Dark days for Surrey if Batty doesn’t change his selection policy!!!!

I don't think it makes too much sense Dougie, but if a coach sees a bit of a tail in the batting line up it is very often the specialist spinner who is dropped while the part time spinner cum batter comes in. This is not yet at the same level as the keepers bias, but does seem to be becoming a trend. Maybe a few wickets with some turn would help. I think Jacks is a useful spinner though he is not likely to win the game as a bowler as a top-class spinner might.

I love watching a class spinner, Saqlain was so entertaining.

Let them make turners if they like. Surprised no one did this year to some extent which is why Batty stuck to his selection policy. I still think our potent pace attack is good enough as it stands to beat anyone, turner or not. They'll play Majid anyway before Virdi and Moriaty, who looks an exciting prospect.

I think most of our seamers can bat a bit and certainly better than Virdi and Moriarty. Even Batty could bat . In the modern game on most pitches playing a spinner who can’t help the tail wag is unlikely.

It didn’t bother Kent and I doubt it would have been an issue for us.

Nevertheless, it's speculation. The fixture never happened. Tesms ought to play each other home and away. (And, yes, I know they didn't always do so.)

Chinaman ,They said that Moriarty was a fine prospect last year until Batty took over.Majiid won’t play because it seems a requirement that spinners must be able to bat !!

Not if they think he is a better spinner.
Again we didn't need Moriaty so why do people keep banging on about it?

Exactly Batty took over and presumably decided he wasn't a good prospect. Look I've said this earlier, our strategy this year did not require front line spinners.

This is incorrect, again - Batty views Jacks as a front line spinner. They’ve both said this to be the case.

Is Thurston your recommendation or a rumor you have heard that he is signing Vic?

A cursory glance at his batting average does not paint a wonderful picture and he is 26 years old, but perhaps you know more.
