Beat me to it! Hampshire lost today while 5 of their team, including 4 bowlers, are playing in the circus.

Hows about Colin De Grandhomme. Just retired from International cricket
Maybe not for the CC, but would be a good shout for T20

Yes, but last year when I spoke to him at Guildford he said he was white ball only. But maybe a good offer from Surrey could change his mind.

He scored 174* against us in the CC last year!

Re: New Signings For 2023
Can someone confirm the status of Virdi and Moriarty, please? I was under the impression their contracts were up this season but I could be wrong
As for overseas players it seems unlikely we'll get Amla back. With Sibley back we are pretty well stocked for batting options, so an all-rounder would be nice. I think it goes without saying I'd love to see Roach back again

But you’ve no issue with a bloke whose never played a first class match and even said to you himself that he plays white ball only. And you also think a good offer from Surrey (which wouldn’t come close to what he earns in T20 leagues) would change his outlook on life? Make it make sense.

I'd like to see Darren Stevens get another contract. But not with Surrey!

I would like to see us sign a top spinner who can bat . I assume Moriarty and/or Virdi are going to leave as they are OOC.

Thin on the ground domestically. Maybe from overseas if Amla leaves

I’d like us to back whoever the best spinner at the club is, regardless of whether they can bat. I see we’ve just given a first contract to Majid.

Yes , on Majid who’s a fine prospect . My point is that Virdi and Moriarty haven’t been picked for their bowling alone . Neither bat or field well and other ‘all-rounders’ have been preferred. I like a varied attack but these days even a number 11 batter has to do more than hold the willow.

If you can win the title without a varied attack then you probably not going to be too bothered?

Re: New Signings For 2023
Wicketkeepers have had to bat to get in the side for some time. I think spinners are in the same position now. I hope Majid learns to bat a bit! I have seen no announcement on the Surrey website and no indication of the length of the contract. No information as to the Awards Ceremony last night either.

Re: New Signings For 2023
Will Jacks had a good night: Supporters' and Players' Player of the Year. Tom Lawes was Young Player of the Year. Jamie Overton was most improved player. Dan Worrall bowler of the year. Don't remember who was batsman of the year - may have been Will Jacks again. Sylvester Clark Large Rum Moment - Sam Curran's six into the pavillion to bring up his maiden century (though it might have been trumped by his brother's maiden century before lunch if the vote had been last week!)
Can't remember who won anything else - but one of the stand-out highlights was when Jim Troughton stepped up and sang his own specially-adapted version of Queen's "I Want to Break Free" which he'd treated the dressing room to earlier.
It was a great evening, of course (timing is everything)....though the club's recent penchant for penny-pinching was in evidence: the meal was not especially good, there was no dessert, and they didn't include the first drink as they have done previously.

Re: New Signings For 2023
No logical reason why a spinner should be able to bat!! Why does this apply only to spinners, why not seamers?? If they are good enough bowlers, play them?? Where does this nonsense come from?

Re: New Signings For 2023
Since Keith Andrew I cannot think of a keeper being selected who has not been able to bat a bit, can you name me any playing regularly as a tailender? Look how long it took Foakes to get in the Test team when he was acknowledged as the best keeper around for several seasons.
Keepers usually bat at 6 or 7, maybe 8 in a strong batting side. I suppose the reason is that coaches can always find someone to do a job as keeper who can bat and they risk a few dropped catches for the extra runs.
