50 over cup 2023
Just been looking through the squad and trying to work out who is/might be available for the 50 over cup.
The below players have been retained or picked up in the draft for the 100.
Jacks
Roy
Pope
Evans
Smith
Sam Curran
Tom Curran
Overton
Jordan
Atkinson
Topley
And Narine but I don't really count him as ours.
Pretty solid t20 side that would be by the way!
100 sides can pick up 2 more players nearer the competition date based on performances in the blast. I imagine we will lose Clark and Moriarty through this as a minimum.
Assuming that we won't have any overseas available for this and assuming Foakes is with England that leaves us with:
Burns
Sibley
Patel
Geddes
Riefer
Blake
Steel
Lawes
Mckerr
Taylor
Barnwell
Worrall
Kimber
Virdi
Maid
Assuming we don't lose any further players and the likes of Burns, Sibley, Worrall aren't rested for the entire competition I think we can put out a solid side that can definitely challenge.
I wonder if Burns fancies keeping again. I know Blake did a decent job last year but Burns keeping would allow us to play an extra allrounder.

Taylor
Worrall
Majid/Virdi
I do hope that if Smith/Atkinson aren't featuring for their sides they are released to us this year. Might as well give them some game time.

Lot of assumptions there I know. But hopefully we can keep that group together.
Worrall is the one I most expect to be rested for the comp as a fast bowlers and saved for the championship run in.

You missed Sheridan Gumbs, a very promising batsman, off the list.

Foakes won’t be with England as there are no England fixtures in August. He may miss the first game or two but he won’t miss the whole thing.

Mickey Mouse competition with all the top players missing.
We should be playing CC games in August and the Hundred
franchises can have bigger squads to cover.

Yes but the 100 is precisely the reason the top players are missing. If you played CC games in August it would be a second division championship. The 100 is the problem, every real cricket fan should boycott it.

Add him to the list I suspect will get picked up for the 100 then. Be q massive bonus if he is available for this but I won't bank on it.

Re: 50 over cup 2023
Isn't Foakes now on a red-ball central con-trick? If that's the case, and assuming (as I do) that he retains his place for an intensive Ashes series which finishes at the end of July, I can't imagine England being happy with him going straight into a 50-over tournament they clearly regard as second-rate at the moment. And I imagine Surrey would be happy enough with him being instructed to rest throughout August, if that means the ECB have no excuse not to allow him to play all our championship matches in September.

But surely less so given the “red ball” specialists like Virdi, Cook, Anderson, etc. would have something to do? You’re also only going to “affect” 3-4 rounds rather than nuking the whole thjng.

Re: 50 over cup 2023
Play in the 50 over cup and boost the teams. We are supposed to be World Champions after all and the next WC is in November. Where does our "team" get any practice. Virdi is hardly a specialist in anything., Poor bloke.

Re: 50 over cup 2023
It wouldn’t be a 2nd div CC in August. The counties tell
the Hundred franchises to use other players whilst they are
playing for their counties for 4 days. The hundred teams have
to get bigger squads to cover for these absences.

Re: 50 over cup 2023
Missing players, afaik:
Birmingham: Smith
London:
Manchester: Evans, Overton
North: Topley
Oval: S Curran, Jacks, Roy, T Curran, Atkinson
South: Jordan
Trent:
Wales: Pope
This theoretically means we're in a significantly better place than last year for this. Yes, we're missing 11 players but we have much better players available, injuries notwithstanding, than we did in 2022.
Available Surrey players for the One Day Cup (injuries notwithstanding):
Batters: Geddes, Burns, Sibley, Patel, Reifer, Steel
Keepers: Foakes, Blake
All-rounders: Clark, Lawes
Seam bowlers: McKerr, Dunn, Worrall, Kimber, Taylor, Barnwell
Spinners: Virdi, Moriarty, Majid
Therefore you can put out a very decent XI in that (Burns, Sibley, Patel, Geddes, Steel, Foakes, Clark, Lawes, McKerr, Worrall, Moriarty - perhaps?), although truth be told due to the increasing red/white ball specialism I reiterate playing 2-3 Championship games would be preferable, not just because we'd be more competitive than we would in the ODC...

Last year we couldn't even field a team at Middlesex.

Surrey CCC were all out 9 down.

In theory thats a pretty strong line up, and should give us a chance in the competition. Whether that line up becomes reality is another matter

Re: 50 over cup 2023
Some players may be rested, Worrall in particular. It may be an opportunity for some other players for example Virdi, Geddes, Patel, McKerr and Blake to push for more game time.
Will we go for it or just use it as a development competition? The available squad being far stronger than last year I think they should play a strong team and try to win it.

Hi Keith - that's what it says about both Guildford games on the Surrey site although I doubt that's right. The ''sold out'' was showing less than an hour after the email came out. I phoned the Club to check, only to get a recorded message saying everyone had been given the day off to rest after all their hard work with the Test Championship final. I kid ye not!
My guess is that tickets will become available to obtain from tomorrow when people start returning from their jolly. What a shambles!
Also shows where members rank in the Club's order of priorities.

Sending an email telling us to book tickets urgently, then giving everyone the day off is a little suboptimal (he says politely)

Some of us got out tickets from the Office about 3 weeks ago. So they maybe sold out. The ground only holds 2000 max.

I successfully placed an order for a ticket this morning. I received an order confirmation with my "file number", but no link to an electronic ticket. Is this what others who have successully ordered a ticket have received? If so, when will the electronic tickets be issued?

Yes same. I would think they'll be issued much nearer the date.

I got a 'ticket' for Lancashire before then seeing that Hampshire had 'sold out'. Wonder if I'll be able to get a guest ticket for my OH
Either way, I still don't think Guildford is fit for purpose when it comes to hosting spectators
