I'm glad we've got on with it, but would be nice to have a session this evening with the ball

Re: Kent away Canterbury
I understand the "bat once" mantra, but given we are certain to lose time tomorrow we should have declared before now and given ourselves the extra time to bowl them out again. I would hate them to finish on 200/7 because, yet again, we have been way too cautious.

Re: Kent away Canterbury
Both BBC and Met Office forecasts for tomorrow have massively improved - certainly for us!
Before just seeing them and like Jackers, I was concerned that we might have batted on too long (as we did and too slowly against Somerset) and denied ourselves crucial time to get 'em out a second time.
As long as the forecasters have got it right now and our bowlers do the same, we should be heading home tomorrow with a very nice 24 points. Hoping so ....

Re: Kent away Canterbury
It's very easy to not appreciate what a great days play we've had if you focus solely on the fact we need to win. (and you're bloody freezing)
We batted so well that morning session it was great entertainment.
You have to take a step back and say I've seen Ryan Patel and Dom Sibley score sixes on the same day, and not many people can say that
Dan Worralls figures atm: 7-4-12-2
---
Ben Compton next man in, saying that he had a neck strain which stopped him from opening.

I think if we get two more in the next 6 overs they'll ask for the extra half hour. No need to worry about tomorrow.

Saying on commentary now that they can't claim the extra half hour if its after 7pm.
If Rob Key hates to to see an opening batsman who makes no effort to score runs, what about watching Ben Compton?

Jackers wrote:You rather miss my point. I am not suggesting that most other counties could match what the ECB pay, nor am I even suggesting that there doesn't need to be a degree of salary regulation in cricket. My point is that if the ECB are imposing it and setting the limits on counties then they also should subject themselves to salary limits on central contracts (including "incrimental" "developmental" etc) which would mean they can't just go round sprinking them round like confetti as they have increasingly been doing.
You might argue that they are never going to be as principled as to do so - I would agree, because they are determined to create an entitled elite of cricketers instead of seeing part of their role as nurturing the county game as well as promoting England, as the Test AND COUNTY Cricket Board once did.
The trouble is that if the ECB does not offer very good money then some of the players are going to opt out of England cricket altogether and make more money on the T20 circuits around the world. OK, not all players are suited to T20 but quite a few of the Test team (and the entire T20 team) are.

Durham (19 pts) beat Worcestershire (3 pts) by 185 runs
Notts (2 pts) lead Somerset (7 pts) by 157 runs with 8 wickets remaining (likely draw)
Warwickshire (5 pts) lead Hampshire (2 pts) by 136 runs with 10 wickets remaining (likely draw)
and
Kent (2pts) trail Surrey (8 pts) by 179 runs with five wickets remaining
---
If we win this match we go up to 2nd place 8 points behind Essex.

Thanks for the overview, Peter.
After Essex's first win of the season, it was reported one of their batsmen had used an oversized bat and that they were likely to face a points deduction as a consequence. However, that hasn't happened (at least as yet) and I haven't seen any further coverage of the matter.
Do you or others here know anything more please?

If its anything like the Premier League they'll wait 18 months give them a 10 point deduction, they'll appeal and 6 months later it will be reduced to 2 points suspended for a year (eg Everton, Chelsea, Man City, Derby)
