I'm not a fan of the night watchman role but credit where it's due - Roach played his part very well to support his skipper and frustrate Hants.
A really good day for Surrey.

The beauty of this Surrey squad is that all of them can contribute (even Patel did well with his much needed 40).

It enabled me to stay home today, watch Arsenal's win at Spurs, and still have (hopefully) a full morning's cricket to watch in pleasant weather tomorrow morning.

Its good to see Durham and Lancashire in wrong half of table after both being tipped to be rivals, on the otherside of the coin Essex are going to be real rivals this year, and we play them twice this season.
Hoping for a Kemar resurgence this morning, he's due a bit of luck.

Lock really did have a story to tell, seemingly undervalued. Sadly finished his life under a bit of cloud. Fascinating chap though.

Might have to watch some football
Would have been nice to have the cricket next weekend as Monday is a Bank Holiday.

Definitely, Ken.
I'll leave Burns, Clark and Worrall to fight it out for MOTM. Although not a contender for that top award, significant credit still belongs imo to Ryan Patel. His innings of 41 in a partnership of 75 won't leap out of the record books in years to come but it was mighty important on Friday when the ball was seaming everywhere. We were 44/4 when Patel went out to bat. Had he gone early leaving us, say, 50/5, who knows what would have happened next?

Viewed from afar, Clark, Worrall and Steel did not seem like particularly brilliant signings at the time, yet here they are performing as well as anyone else. Either "afar" underrated them or Surrey saw significant undeveloped potential. It's not all about the marquee signings.

There is a fourth contender for MOTM. The man who produced a wicket which stayed narrowly the right side of the pitch inspectors' attentions on Day 1, and a ground which recovered from the monsoon rains of late Saturday and much of Sunday to enable enough play for a result (none of the other games around the country came remotely close to it).
Not only is Rory Burns returning to his best form with the bat after two pretty lean years, but his luck with the toss seems to have improved significantly this year. While we may still have won, I suspect it would have been a much closer affair had we been inserted first thing on Friday under those conditions and on that pitch.
