Northants vs Surrey 5th-8th September
Well I'm going to be positive and start a thread as things are looking ok, including the weather. Team to be announced Saturday. Foakes perhaps?
Fingers crossed

No Roy, Curran, Overton, Geddes or Foakes for various debatable reasons. Geddes is self isolating.
Jacks, Topley and Jordan Clark in the squad.

I should like to know on what basis Roy has been prevented from playing by the ECB. He has not played enough recently to need a rest. The ECB show total disrespect for county cricket, players should be released to play for their counties unless there is a very good reason for not doing so.

The quote the BBC: "to further hone his white ball skills". Yes really. Quite frankly though, do we need him?

Dare I say that we don't really deserve Jamie Smith?

One of my favourite stats of the whole year is the fact that Smith is the only player to have played every game (in all three formats) for us this year.

A thoroughly enjoyable day's cricket, helped by the wonderful weather which was long overdue. I hope the game doesn't rattle along any quicker: I want to see at least 3 days and ideally 4.
Ben Foakes is turning out for the stiffs this week as part of his rehabilitation.

And that in a Surrey season of ''blink and the player's injured or playing/resting for some other team'' gets Smith my Player of the Season vote.

I do worry about his Ashes squad place with the re-emergence of Bairstow and the fact Pope will be on that tour, so they will be well catered for keepers.

Re: Northants vs Surrey 5th-8th September
I hope you are right. Going forward I am looking forward to seeing Ben back with Surrey on a regular basis, releasing Jamie Smith to become a specialist batsman. I am not sure he would have managed to play the vital innings we saw from him yesterday had we batted second, after a day or more with the gloves on in sweltering conditions.
I am sure our Director of Cricket would be the first to acknowledge that if you are lucky enough to have a top-class wicket keeper who is also very good with the bat it is better than asking a young cricketer who had the potential to become a very good batsman to keep as well.

Good effort so far with the ball on a sweltering day: Northants 125 for 7.. Will we let the tail wag as we usually do?
Alec Stewart is currently umpiring at square leg/point at both ends, resplendent in his Surrey training top.

All credit to the Surrey supporters who have travelled to Northants and hope you have a good time ending with a win.
The lack of match comments though does suggest there isn't that much interest in the Division Two group which we are now in. Not really surprising. Whilst any Championship cricket is welcomed, we have to be in Division One for it to be properly meaningful.

Suspect the Test Match has dulled the interest in this game more than anything else.
Is it just not similar to any other year when we end up mid-table? Like 2016, 2017, 2019…

Yes your right, but it's so much better than all that toxic England crap.

The pessimist in me says that whatever we put up as a total might not be easy to defend

Possibly but it's disappointing to end up outside the top 2 of a random group of six teams and thus being automatically ineligble for the Championship (which is and always should be our aim) with as many as four matches left.
