Re: Notts at the Oval
There is (rightly) a premium on win points this season. Warwicks have won, and Essex will probably win too.
If we were playing one of our title rivals I could accept the cautious approach suggested by others this morning, but we aren't. We have to try to force the win. The worst that can happen is we miss out on four draw points in a quest for 16. If Notts earn the 16 a bowler light, good luck to them. But playing cautiously under all the circumstances would be like Man City defending at home to Fulham when Fulham are playing with 10 men.

Point of order, Mr Speaker, Fulham nearly won that game…

I guess you're right. But based on what I've seen so far I just can't see us bowling them out.Jackers wrote:There is (rightly) a premium on win points this season. Warwicks have won, and Essex will probably win too.

We could have done with Tom Lawes playing this innings on the last morning against Lancashire. Today....we could have done with Abbott or Jamie O in by now.

Re: Notts at the Oval
I kind of get it - just play with some common sense and let Jacks do the scoring. Could have easily just sparked a collapse
Imagine the tempo will be upped when they get a spinner on, at this point if we can get a lead of 300 odd in the next hour it's a carrot worth dangling for the win - Notts desperately need the points as well

New ball due. There won't be a spinner on for a while after that.Alex! wrote:I kind of get it - just play with some common sense and let Jacks do the scoring. Could have easily just sparked a collapse

Re: Notts at the Oval
Wow - they've lost another bowler to injury. So there is a spinner on after all :-)

Draw, unless we give them 60 overs and bowl really well.

Re: Notts at the Oval
In the context of the game 100 odd runs in a session feels rather underwhelming. Lawes has looked like a decent bat but I think it's safe to say we're heading towards a draw barring some magic

I’d want to set at least 5rpo as a target if we’re bowling 50+ overs.

Hard to see us bowling them out on this pitch, took us a long time in their first innings, It will take s tremendous bowling effort to do so!!

Enjoyed Hameed charging off the field to get his pads on before being stopped dead in his tracks!

That looked rather out - think JOverton might be rather lucky

Re: Notts at the Oval
From the stream, that appeared to be a good catch. I think the dust blowing up from the old wicket as the fielder fell confused the umpires.

And that’s more or less the perfect all-results-possible target.

Re: Notts at the Oval
Is the fact that we might not bowl them out down to the pitch, or the kookaburra ball.
looking at some of the scores from around the grounds, if a team gets through the 1st 20 overs or so, they seem to make a big total
In this round alone we had Somerset make 500 (from 41-4), Glamorgan 403 (from 93-7), Sussex and Derbyshire making over 400 as well as Yorkshire.
That cant all be down to bad pitches, and has to be something to do with the ball as well

Re: Notts at the Oval
I think the pitches we have played on this season have been bland, the Kookaburra ball has not helped. We have looked notably less likely to get wickets recently. The choice of overseas players for the last third of the season will be critical. I think a class bat to replace Pope and a pace bowler who takes wickets are required, I don't know if Abbott or Roach is available.

Re: Notts at the Oval
I think the problem is the last two pitches haven’t suited the seam dominated side we’ve selected. Can’t understand why Lee Fortis has prepared such pitches. He had previously this season produced some excellent pitches, which suited our attacks.Even after 4 days, there is little sign of a result because the wicket is so flat!
