Re: Surrey v Warwickshire
Great piece of commentary earlier. “Danny Briggs only bowled one over in The Hundred” I didn’t think you had ‘overs’ in The 100?

Have to say every now and then Cam Steel puts in a performance which justifies his place in the squad as a utility player. He's clearly also content with that role. Great player to have around the team

Re: Surrey v Warwickshire
A very commanding day after a morning which looked like it could have gone either way. Sibley will get his share of low scores across the year, but he is one of the few opening batsmen in the country now that is capable of batting all day (and he would probably have done so without the daft run-out). Jamie Smith made batting look simpler than anyone else, and Ben Foakes (with excellent support from Cameron Steel) took advantage of a perfect batting afternoon, an easing pitch and surprisingly lacklustre Warwickshire change-bowling (who's Henry Brookes?!!)
We will almost certainly have enough runs to ensure we don't lose the game, so it is now a question of whether the attack we have selected can bowl them out twice in temperatures of 36-40 degrees.

Re: Surrey v Warwickshire
Thank you. The "potential superstar" had a bit of a mare today - 11 overs for 70. Danny Briggs, on the other hand, did what any captain would want his spinner to do on the first day when it's very hot and conditions are ideal for batting: bowl lots of overs cheaply. 23 overs for 43 was a great effort.

I agree but they are going to have to bat a lot better than in any other game this season. With the Indian Test bowler Yadav opening with Cook and with Harmer to follow, I have my doubts whether Middlesex will manage enough runs to trouble Essex and there is no chance of the weather playing any part in the matches this week, it is set fair & hot! Remember that Middlesex have so far only got 2 batting points all season which must be some kind of record even allowing for the changes in bonus point rules.

It certainly looked like a pretty big crowd for a CC match at the Oval today on the video feed & highlights. Admittedly the weather was good and we have all been starved of proper cricket for around 6 weeks but even so it is great to see that the red ball game is still loved. Has anyone seen or heard a figure for today's attendance?

I am not so sure that Jamie Smith is a certainty for Player of Season. I think Ben Foakes is pushing him hard. This was Foakes' third century this season, his keeping has again been fantastic and Smith, although always looking a class above everyone else, is developing a nasty little habit (like Joe Root) of not turning enough scores of 50-100 into centuries, as occurred again today. Anyway they have both had wonderful seasons and have thankfully helped to make up for the pretty poor contribution from numbers 1-3 in the batting line up. As I have posted a couple of times recently, it is now fairly obvious why Alec Stewart and presumably Gareth Batty too were pleased to sign Dan Lawrence for next year.

If we manage to win the title then the all-round contributions of Clark and Abbot would have made the difference far more than Smith’s excellently crafted runs.

I'd agree on that. I notice you say "if" we manage to win the title. It is very much an if with Essex with two home games where they hardly ever lose, the first against Middlesex. Yes well, say no more.

Well this morning has been an absolute disaster so far. Hopefully we have enough runs in the bank that it won't prove costly.

I think our best hope in that match is that Essex somehow don't get maximum bonus points ....Chinaman wrote:dougieginn wrote:It’s surely in our own hands to win the CC,just keep winning and we can’t be caught!!

Well we've righted the wrong of that morning with the bat by getting 3 before lunch.

Couldn't go today so watching on You Tube.Do any of the commentators ever talk about the game being played out in front of them? They are currently regaling us with a tale of a 51 year old Sri Lankan and another about Ewan Chatfield.

Went to his coffee shop in Headingley a few weeks ago, was great! Recommend a trip if you are in Leeds.
