I think Virdi would’ve bowled well definitely more economical than Jacks. The Nightwatchman wrote:Well I've watched the whole game in glorious weather. Look the main reason we got bowled out was on this dead pitch is as soon as you accelerate wickets tumble. They had a better spinner but Jack's 7for went for less runs. You can't blame the selection, there is virtually no one else to pick! But I hope we don't play Steele next week. No form with bat or ball. Notts were never going to try a run chase in a million years and risk potentially losing 8 points to join Kent at the bottom. Anyway today was far more interesting than us batting to 5.50.
Oh and Virdi would probably have only been marginally better than Jacks, perhaps.

Loaning out a specialist spinner probably knowing the type of pitch we were likely to come across at Trent Bridge wasn’t great thinking.Jackers wrote:You could look at that from the other perspective and say that part of the purpose of a good spinner is to bowl lots of overs economically on unhelpful pitches, as well as to take wickets cheaply on helpful ones.
Gareth Batty was himself the master of that - an automatic selection for us regardless of the conditions, because he could tie an end down and enable the quicker bowlers to bowl short spells in rotation.
That's what many other counties have, and we lack. We get away with it at The Oval, because we prepare pitches that help our outstanding seam bowlers. Here, and at the Rose Bowl earlier in the year, the lack of a spinner who can contain even when not taking wickets has been conspicuous.

Virdi would definitely have bowled better than our two part timers!! A couple of years ago he took 14 wickets in a match at the same venue!!! His career record is far better than Jacks or Steel!!! there is no comparison!!! Will Batty never learn, unfortunately not!!!!!The Nightwatchman wrote:Well I've watched the whole game in glorious weather. The 14 wickets were on a raging turner. About 4 years ago I think. For a variety of reasons his form has never really recovered. Plus we've not needed spinners to win 2, probably 3 titles. Never been a fan I'm afrad but he'll probably get a contract at Worcester, so good luck.

The fact Virdi didn't bowl a ball in One Day Cup shows he's not in our plans, sadly.
Will we ever learn? Hampshire away with part time spinners we took 1 wicket in that match in 64 Overs of spin.
After the first 2 or 3 matches Steel really has gone off the boil with the ball and his batting (138 runs in 7 matches this season) is abysmal. At this moment in time he's absolutely no use in the team.
On the evidence of this match its time to atleast put Majid into the match squad as an option.

In the chase.
Having watched them last week and seeing their scorecard this week, I would hold out little faith in Lancs. Ultimately, we have the chance the week after next to pretty much get the job done down at Taunton. Really should have beaten them at the Oval in April, Taunton in September with a weakened side will be a very tough test.
Exactly. That ties in with my post earlier yesterday. If we had beaten Somerset at the Oval which we should have done had we not wasted time crawling along in our first innings, we would now have a 40 point lead over them.

If Somerset beat us with full bonus points, we will only be ahead on whatever bonus points we get. (against Hampshire (a) we got no bonus points!)
We then have Durham (h) and Essex (a) - not the easiest of run-ins.
Somerset play Lancashire (a) and Hampshire (h)
Hampshire play Kent (a) and Worcs (h) before playing Somerset, so 2 wins for them could very much put them in mix certainly to nick 2nd spot.

I'll generalise here: we need to avoid this Surrey "has a divine right to beat everybody mantra". We don't and teams are not going to roll over for us, and neither should they. Yes of course I want Surrey to win, but even if Notts had gone for it yesterday and won ( pretty unlikely) I'd much rather see an exciting conclusion, whoever wins, than a bore draw any day of the week.

I wonder if England will allow Bashir to play for Somerset in that game?

Majid hasn’t seem to kick on this season maybe worth a go. Unless he is dropped for The Oval (unlikely), I doubt it, given the match starts on Day 4 of the Test Match.

Hampshire having to play Somerset gives them a squeak Worcestershire are really giving it a go to stay up.All those permutations are only likely if Surrey screw up.Jhe10077 wrote:Still lots of twist and turns to come.Peter.M.Gardens wrote:guildfordbat wrote:gjones31 wrote:Jhe10077 wrote:Somerset have to go to Old Trafford for Lancashire who are in the Thick of it at the Bottom ( very disappointing this season) Then Hampshire at home which looks difficult.I’ve a feeling the weather may play a big part in the outcome points already on the Board May be decisive.Pink Panther wrote:Somerset are 24 behind us, so with 8 points for the draw, 3 draws could be enough, or 1 win as long as we don't lose at Taunton.Jhe10077 wrote:Essex title bid over realistically only Somerset left

Even if we screw up, unless it’s a huge screw-up we won’t concede a net 24 points in one go and thus we ought to still have the lead; all we then have to do is worry about ourselves before we worry about Somersault.

Although Somerset have a trip to Lancs which atm, barring bad weather, looks a guaranteed 24 points for any visiting side.

Well if we do lose next week, at least it'll liven up the title run in! Wouldn't be surprised to see Hants coming into the mix, more of a 3 way race I think than a 2. As long as I don't have to go to Chelmsford I don't mind. By then it'll be dark by 5pm if its cloudy.
