Surrey v Lanccs Empty Surrey v Lanccs

Wednesday looks likely to be wet.

What do you think the side should be? My selection : Burns, Sibley, Latham, Smith, Foakes, Jacks, Curran S, Clark, Abbott, Atkinson, Worrall.

Not an easy game.

Might Jacks be called up by England to replace Ali? If so, I’d play Virdi.

Might Ben Foakes be called up ? Jamie Smith has missed the last couple of T20 matches due to injury so may not be available.

Was Ben Foakes in the squad?
I thought that was it for the first 2 Tests; not that I believe he shouldn't be in.

I predicted at the start of the season that Lancashire would be our nearest challengers. Despite the fact they have drawn a lot of their games so far I stand by that. They are the only team to match our quality and depth in all departments.

Putting Lancs in with this weather is a strange one imo. Although we’ve taken wickets. We are obviously not worried about the Wicket taking spin later in the game.

The form of our Captain is a worry, he should play the 50 over competition to see if he can find form. I hope this poor form is not related to the rumoured loss of his enthusiasm when dropped by England, if it is he and Surrey may have to decide what to do.
I was astonished that we put them in, ideal conditions for batting, seems the in thing to throw traditional behaviour out of the window, but actually there is usually a good reason for the tradition, bat first unless there is very real advantage in not doing so.

The pitch was bouncy and they had the bowlers to use that. Atkinson, who would have loved the pitch as he is a dig it in bowler, was not selected.

I don’t think its good idea to ALWAYS insert the opposition when you win the toss, especially on a baking hot day like today. The bowlers certainly tired as the day went on.

Blimey it was hot today! There were more people in the covered part of The Bedser seeking shade than i've ever seen before.

We bowled them out inside 80 overs and you're still moaning about that decision!?

Andrew Strauss, in his autobiography, said "if in doubt, bowl". A side can lose the game in the first hour if they're 30-5. They can't win it being 70-0. Anyone who's watched any Tests in New Zealand knows bowling first is usually the way forward - team one gets 400, team two gets 650, team three gets 200, game over. I thought this pitch had an air of that about it, but I was wrong. Certainly the Kookaburra moved more than everyone expected.
----
Had Root bowled first at The Gabba who knows the path Rory's career would have taken. But yes, the fact Rory stood there today for a good few seconds before going certainly worried me, he looked resigned, defeated even. Latham so far has really not delivered to expectations and "Sibcrawl" (as opposed to Bazball) didn't pay off either.

Tomorrow is pivotal - if Smith, Jacks, and Curran make a quick 50-100 each then we could take the game away from them.

We're certainly missing Rory's runs. I wonder whether he's altered his game to try and win his England place back - I may be wrong but I think the few runs he has got this season have been at a faster scoring rate than has been typical for him in the past. Anyway it looks like we're in a bit of a hole again but we've dug ourselves out of worse in the past so I guess we should keep the faith. Wednesday's forecast isn't looking quite as bad now - at least not the one I've just looked at - so we could get 4 full days in after all.

Surprisingly, Burns (who is averaging 29 this term) has 381 runs from 724 balls, that’s a strike rate of 52, only marginally higher than his cateer strike rate of 49.

I suspect the 88 from 105 (or whatever it was) is doing a bit of heavy lifting mentally here.
