Re: The IPL 2024
You wonder how many of the missing Indian Test players might be fit for the IPL?

Yes. I think they are all the same. Even Surrey 's walking injury Reece Topley miraculously "recovers" from his latest injury as soon as a T20 competition is due. It's the money I'm afraid.

We'd potentially have an excellent T20 side, but some of these players only show up for the Hundred these days!
As has been said Surrey don't pay enough for some, some of these players don't get out of bed unless its for a five figure sum.

I think it’s the Beginning of the End for the 4 Day CC especially the Top Teams in Div 1 like Surrey who are never ever likely to field their Strongest Line Up or Anywhere like it.

I do think we could change back to three day games but played over longer hours. This would placate the white ball obsessives who want more and more games.

Re: The IPL 2024
The Womens IPL Final was on Sky between football matches yesterday afternoon. (Just before Man Utd v Liverpool)
If this is the top Ladies talent, (Kapp, Perry, Capsey all names I recognised), a little bit embarrasing.
Delhi bowled out for 113, Bangalore 115-2 off 19.3 Overs.
You'd think if you didn't have the power to hit sixes or the pace to bowl lightning fast, the ladies game could excel in other areas, like picking off singles, rotating the strike, being agile/attacking in the field or mastering the bowling of spin. But the amount of bad balls bowled from the best ladies spinners in the world, that weren't punished was excrutiating. It was like watching one day village cricket from 1980s.
All compounded by fact that Man Utd 4-3 Liverpool that followed that was a classic, everything that this final wasn't!

A lot of spin in mens' T20 is provided by spinners who rarely get a bowl in four day cricket. A "good" ball in T20 is one which can only be shunted out to one of the boundary riders for a single. In four day cricket that would have been a four. I find myself thinking "why aren't you trying to bowl properly?" but the answer seems to be that rubbish spinners get results. I was brought up on Edmonds and Emburey strangling the life out of the middle order (which makes it harder to watch someone like Chris Green bowlinbg) and I find it hard to believe that they would have struggled, even against the rampers and reverse sweepers of today, but who knows?
I would imagine that the same applies to spinners in the womens' game and that what appears to be rubbish might just be "fit for purpose. Having said that, you may not have been watching the world's best spinners in action. Ecclestone is supposed to the best and when I have watched her bowl she has been pretty good.

There's this great interview with our very own Gaz who talks about the extensive differences between red and white ball spinners these days. https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/vitality-t20-blast-2021-taking-stock-where-does-traditional-finger-spin-fit-into-t20-1269459

Re: The IPL 2024
So of the 5 Surrey players who signed up for the IPL, 3 have dropped out.
Tom Curran knee injury, Jason Roy personal reasons and Gus Atkinson tiredness.
Only 2 players remaining in IPL, Reece Topley and Will Jacks play for bottom club Royal Challengers Bengaluru (1 win in 8 )
Jacks has scored 55, 7 and 8 in his 3 matches so far, 1 wicket
Reece Topley has 4 wickets in his 4 matches. Topley missed opening matches due to injury!

He plays for the mighty Punjab Kings (2nd bottom, 2 wins from 8 matches)
Sam Curran's played in all 8 matches so far, top score 63, 11 wickets.

Re: The IPL 2024
I know Topley flirted with red-ball cricket a few years ago, but I sense he is now at the stage of his career where he wants to make as much money from the white-ball game as he can for the next 4/5 years.
Sam played only one red-ball match for us last summer (the defeat at home to Lancashire). I don't know whether that was his choice or ours: I sense that as his England test career drifts into the rear-view mirror he may decide to become a white-ball only specialist like his brother.
Jacks is a more difficult one. He is still relatively young, and has the potential to remain one of the increasingly rare multi-format cricketers as we see more and more "picking of lanes". Under normal circumstances you would say that Steel is keeping his place warm, but blimey you can't drop the bloke any time soon! I'd say there will be a place for Jacks once Pope and Foakes depart after the first seven rounds and T20 world cup, but it will be as a middle-order batsman coming in at 5 rather than (as we have seen) as an all-rounder coming in at 6 or even 7. Steel and Lawrence are clearly more potent spin options.

Re: The IPL 2024
I think there will only be one maybe two county matches Jacks is available for, after the Hundred is over and before the England ODI series v Australia.
The white ball players we ideally want to play in our Vitality T20 matches but this US World Mega League starts on 4th July so I'd imagine the likes of Jordan, Roy and Narine will be off to that if they can get a few more quid than Surrey will pay.
I'd hope Jacks does get atleast the one county match in, because he is a bloody good batsman, really sad we'll barely see anything of him at the Oval this year.
Worth to note none of the IPL players will be playing in the Pakistan T20 series, so Topley, Sam Curran and Jacks won't be playing at the Oval on 30th May!

Just as well. The first two have probably forgotten how to get there.

They know how to get here to use the facilities between white ball tournaments. We even had a heated marquee to make them feel at home.
