"Rory Burns has been rested by the ECB after the fifth LV Insurance Test with India was cancelled.."
Yes, very tiring for Rory was that cancellation. Not surprised the ECB have given him time off. His family have asked for privacy at this difficult time.

And this is a perfect example of why until central contracting is radically changed I don't give a damn about England cricket. Who the hell do the ECB think they are - this is Surrey's captain, we have a championship game, and there is no earthly reason why he should not be leading the team. It leaves us a real problem at the top of the order and short of batsmen. .
From the squad named I would go: Amla, Patel, Evans, Pope, Smith, Jacks, Clark, Atkinson, Moriarty, Virdi, Topley

The thing is that resting is perfectly valid (and it was the reason central contracts were brought in) but they have increasingly overused “resting” in recent times.
How does Burns need a rest!?

Exactly. He was allocated to a franchise during the 100 but I don't recall him actually playing any of the matches. He would be playing in a five day match right now but for the cancellation farce, so why can't he play in our four day match?RB wrote:The thing is that resting is perfectly valid (and it was the reason central contracts were brought in) but they have increasingly overused “resting” in recent times.

Yep, agree about Burns and the eleven from the sixteen named.

I suspect Steel will be retained rather than Evans and so far there's been a policy of only picking Topley for alternate Championship matches, in which case he could be due to miss this one. The selection of Moriarty depends upon how spin friendly the pitch is expected to be, and I guess he's also more likely to be picked if Steel isn't, but I always like to see a pair of proper spinners bowling together whenever possible.Jackers wrote:From the squad named I would go: Amla, Patel, Evans, Pope, Smith, Jacks, Clark, Atkinson, Moriarty, Virdi, Topley

I'd just like to thank Roy, Burns and the Currans for their unstinting dedication and commitment to the Surrey cause

That's unfair on Burns, who was withheld from playing in this match by the ECB and has never got involved with the IPL.John Hamilton wrote:

I am hoping to come down for the evening sessions on all four days, not least because I’ve not seen Cook bat in person in about 15 years.

Re: Any sign of tomorrow's team/squad?
Would have thought it an ideal occasion to prepare a spinning pitch and play Moriarty and Virdi. What happened to Virdi being our number one spinner according to Stewart at the beginning of the season ?

The issue with preparing a spinning pitch is that Essex have Harmer, and he’s better than all our spinners put together. As for Virdi, it’s now the end of the season so not sure there’s any value in judging Stewie on what he said months ago. I think Moriarty deserves a chance on current form.

Every chance he'll be batting in the evening session of 3 out of the 4 days.....

Re: Any sign of tomorrow's team/squad?
A day which perfectly reflects where we are as a club. Our powder-puff bowing attack actually bowled ok before lunch, with Topley and Clark occasionally beating the bat. Thereafter, we were thoroughly innocuous against a team of Essex's class. How on earth Taylor was selected beggars belief. Virdi bowled poorly at Northants but surely he would have been a better selection, as would McKerr or even Dunn, assuming he is currently fit.
At some point tomorrow Surrey will be batting against Porter, the "other" Cook and Harmer. I fear that we will be relying on Amla and Pope if we are to avoid the follow-on. The dodgy weather forecast for Tuesday means that there is at least a chance the match will go into the fourth day. Every cloud....

I’ve just seen that Woakes is playing for Warwickshire after bowling 47 overs in the last Test after being out injured for a very long time. But Rory Burns is being rested.

Presumably Pope's shoulder means the end of his wicket keeping days.Cee Gee wrote:We’ve finally run out of wicket keepers.
