Hope he makes a go of this with a proper run of games. Virdi has taken plenty of wickets for the 2s this season so probably deserves the next opportunity in the 1st team.

At least someone recognises his ability, although unfortunately it’s not Surrey’s coach.

Will be a sad day when both him and Virdi inevitably go.

Driven out by Stewart and Batty, who have no idea of value of spin. Because of coaches/managers England have no future spinners on the horizon. We will regret the anti spin brigade. Stewart has often said his job is to produce players for England, that obviously doesn’t apply to spinners!!

I mean, I hate it, but at the same time why break a system that is working perfectly and winning us games of cricket

What do we do if the opposition produce a turning pitch, as they will do later in the summer. We will be stuffed with our seam filled attack!!!

Don't see anything this summer other than ridiculously flat decks

I daresay there maybe by early September, but I still doubt we will pick him or Virdi while Jacks and Steel (whoops) are available. Why change a winning formula.

Last year Jacks 17@47,Steel 9@ 29.33, the opposition will be quaking in their boots, won’t they!!! Besides Batty will pick Steel and won’t bowl him as usual.

Considering we’ve lost 1 of the last 21 championship games, they probably should be quaking!

For the reasons Dougieginn suggests, we should include a specialist spinner in the squad for away games, especially at this time of year when the pitches are harder and the weather dryer. I guess for the next couple that will be Virdi.

Not sure it will be, Jackers. More likely to be Jacks or even Steele.

Benmug The match we lost was against Lancs on a spinners pitch in September last, teams will learn from that and prepare turners for later in the season and pack their side with specialist spinner and make sure there is nothing in for our seamers!

It was also the last game of the season when we'd already won the title!

It was, but just as against Essex in 2018 the team would have wanted to try to remain invincible. Lancashire (with Parkinson) were too strong for us on that pitch in September, and it was only Moriarty's five-fer that made it any sort of contest.

Re: Dan Moriarty loaned to Yorkshire
Whilst I have sympathy for Moriarty and Virdi, my one overriding aim each season is for Surrey to win the County Championship. As is well known here, we achieved that last year and currently top the table. Stewart and Batty therefore have my support for the timebeing when it comes to team selections even if I might on occasions have opted for a different make up.
Just one further point concerning Moriarty and his loan move. If he is to play for Surrey in the final weeks of the season, his playing Championship cricket for Yorkshire should benefit him and us more than playing for our seconds or sitting on our bench.

The question that should be asked of Batty is,how many matches would he have played under a similar anti-spin management?? He would never have played for England in this regime.Seem to recall he played nearly every match!! Also remember the 2018 CC win was with Virdi playing nearly every game. Also, worth remembering our 7 CC years under Surridge/May was due mainly to 2 spinners ,Lock and Laker and the Hollioake years it was Sals and Saqlain. It is Virdi and Moriarty’s misfortune and I think England’s that a seam obsessed coach is in charge!!

I wonder what this means for Dom Bess, short and long term.

Re: Dan Moriarty loaned to Yorkshire
If the Professor is not going to be selected for Surrey, a decision I have doubts about, then it is best if he is loaned out. As Guildford points out this keeps him ready when needed by us.
We also do seem to have a number of players on the books solely so that we can field a team in the one dayers while most of the squad have been pinched for the horrid hundred. This is an appalling situation for these players and financially a burden. These players too should be loaned out where possible, McKerr has already gone on loan.

I don’t think anyone would be fighting to get Cameron Steel!

Re: Dan Moriarty loaned to Yorkshire
One relevant factor in spin going out of fashion is that far fewer overs than ever before are now bowled each day, especially at international level. One of the spinner's key roles was to "hold an end up" by bowling 25-30 or so overs at an economical rate, to give the seamers respite. That is no longer so necessary when the five seamers need only bowl 15 or so overs each in a full day in the field, punctuated by lots of breaks.

I'm not sure we have an anti spin managment. If we the calibre of a Lock, Laker, Saqlain and even Salisbury no doubt they would play, even on today's pitches which are not often spin friendly for a host of previous discussed reasons. The reality is we haven't, and really neither has anyone else. Virdi unfortunately is a shadow of what he was in 2018 and Moriaty, well if there is something there I can't see it.he was awful at Canterbury. The aforementioned 4 greats above could also bat and field which, like it or not, is deemed almost essential today. And short of flogging it to death, we ain't needed a front line spinner in the last two seasons, which is why Jacks and sometimes everyone's favourite (!) Steel gets the nod.
