Re: Dan Moriarty loaned to Yorkshire
You improve by playing in the 2s,how do we know how good Virdi and Moriarty if they only play once in a blue moon??? Can’t imagine Jacks or he who is not to be mentioned taking 14 wickets in a match as Virdi has done, can you?

Jackers,in the Test the 3spinners took on 14 wickets out of 36 that fell, and the 8 seamers took 22 between them. I make that 5 each for the spinner’s each, and 3 each for others. Hardly going out of fashion!

Re: Dan Moriarty loaned to Yorkshire
I take the point, but mine still stands. Even had we not been blessed with spinners of the calibre of Laker and Lock, Surrey couldn't have relied on five seam bowlers to carry the load in the 50s, when 120 overs a day was the quota.
When I first started watching early 70s there were still I think 108 overs to be bowled in the day. If we lost the toss on a hot day in perfect batting conditions Pocock and Intikhab would probably bowl 35 overs between them, giving Arnold, Jackman, Storey (with a bit of Roope) a chance to recharge. That isn't necessary today with typically 90 overs on the equivalent day, with ball changes, drinks breaks on the coolest of days, slow over rates etc etc.
In other words, a seam-only policy is a luxury the modern game allows, for better or (in my humble opinion) for worse.

Don't like the loan system being used like this.

That's two five-fers in the last three championship matches he's played.
Not bad for a relatively young spinner some don't seem to rate much.

It’s good to see a proper spinner being backed and supported for a change. I hope he gets a full move there.

Hell, no. I hope he benefits from the match practice and takes loads of wickets for us in the years to come. This obsession with an all-seam attack won't last forever.

Hell no? Strange.
Surrey were looking to sign an overseas spinner who bats last winter. Happy for you to want us to waste prime years of his career away but I’d rather he got a proper chance somewhere.
Surrey know what he can do. If he was going play more by now then he would have done. We don’t even pick him in T20 FFS.

Hope Dan enjoyed his trip back down to the Oval to carry the drinks last night.

I’m sure that he could hardly have bowled worse in the last T20 than those on display. He has a good record in T 20s. Unfortunately with we have a coach who thinks only in terms of seam bowlers,it might work the CC ,but clearly not in the T20, as recent results demonstrate clearly,Wake up Batty!!!Cee Gee wrote:Hope Dan enjoyed his trip back down to the Oval to carry the drinks last night.

The cricketer magazine reports that it’s likely for Moriarty’s move to Yorkshire to become permanent.

If that’s true ,Batty has finally succeeded in driving out one spin bowler, how much longer before Virdi goes?? Sad days for Surrey,we will regret!!!

Well I'm surprised it's taken so long. Good for him because he won't get a game with us because we largely don't need a "front line" spinner, especially one who can't really bat or field very well. Yorkshire need all the help they can get. Mind you Virdi is the same. I know most won't agree, but I never considered either of them as 1st Division material, bar Virdi about 5 years ago.

Re: Dan Moriarty loaned to Yorkshire
It's funny how the memory can play tricks. I remember Dan Moriarty coming into the team in 2020 and making an immediate impact. The stats tend to support that: he took 17 wickets in his first two games including match figures of 11/224 in one of those.
The following season (two years ago) - still a very young bowler - he did pretty well in his limited opportunities - 18 wickets from his 4 matches including a 6/60.
Since then, as we know, Surrey have decided to prepare pitches specifically designed not to suit spin. Despite that, in his only appearance last year (the dead rubber at Old Trafford) he took a five-fer when the other bowlers were carted all over the shop.
When you factor in that (as we saw last Friday) he is an asset in T20 cricket, I tend to agree that we would be making a big mistake to let him go. The "seam friendly" pitch strategy won't last forever: even in the past couple of games it has backfired either because the opposition's seamers have bowled better than ours or because they have won the toss and put us in knowing that the lack of a specialist spinner batting last is one less thing they have to worry about. Had Notts not been unlucky with injuries when they had us in trouble at lunch, we could well be staring down the barrel of a second successive home defeat right now, rather than a disappointing draw.
I hope he continues to do well on loan at Yorkshire, but I want him back at The Oval.

Re: Dan Moriarty loaned to Yorkshire
I am assume we’d be content to let him go as we have Majid coming through in the 2s.
To note, the report also said there is very little interest from other counties in Virdi.

Re: Dan Moriarty loaned to Yorkshire
I doubt if Lock or Laker would get into the side with Batty in charge. We will not get seam friendly pitches away from the Oval with an all seam attack!! Such a short sighted approach!!!!
