You say that but it's more that Hardie is having a stinker, finding the fielder or missing the ball with every single shot. Foakes is trying his best but needs some support.

Wonderful win ,didn’t think they had a hope when Smith got out.Hardie comes good at last. Much credit for keeping going for it at that stage!!

From the moment Essex and Hampshire were clearly on course to win their matches, the outcome of this game looked likely to define the whole course of our season, for good or (as was looking increasingly likely) for ill. The way that we hauled ourselves over the line will be the one that we will look back on, in the same way that we looked back on the finish against Lancashire in 2018 as the denining moment (the dramatic Will Jacks catch..).

Credit to Jamie Overton for his efforts in the Yorkshire second innings, after getting no joy in the first. Ben Foakes batted beautifully in both innings. But a special word for Alec Stewart's judgement in getting Hardie. Whenever people moan about what is the point of bringing in an overseas player for just one game, they should remember this match. Ideally, you get someone in for a run of matches, but in this day and age that isn't always possible. If Hardie hadn't played it would have been Cameron Steel in the all-rounder slot and we would not have won the game.

I'm pleased for all of you that stayed up for the last day. It's probably a good thing I didn't.  I was feeling quite rough as the day wore on yesterday, and felt rubbish on the journey back. It appears that Covid John was booked in at my B and B. I hope I'll get rid of it in time for Essex, though even if I am clear I'm not sure I'll be up for 38 degrees on Tuesday.

I’m so pleased there isn’t any test cricket for a few weeks because Jamie would be off. Outstanding performance from him today. I’m pleased for Hardie too, I thought he’d be more suited to the longer form and so it proved. I’ve no idea where he’s off to now or why it was such a short deal but in the absence of Jordan Clark it would be useful for him to stick around for August.

Brilliant. My criticism about Amla coming in was short sighted but every one of the batsmen played their part. I did think after the 3 overs from the Angel Gabriel our chance had gone despite the runs scored but it just makes championship cricket worth watching. Pity about the Yorkshire streaming-it was poor.

Also, Yorkshire should be docked points for the amount of times the stream cut out at very important moments.

Brilliant win. Like others,I was beginning to think we should shut up shop. I’m glad the players had more nerve. Well done, all.

There can't be many teams that have come back to win after conceding over 500 in the first innings of a match. This team really do never give up. There are still some tricky matches to come but I'm starting to believe now. But it's a shame we don't get to play Hampshire again.

What a game! I followed all 4 days on the stream - what a fabulous advert for county cricket. The rhythms and swings of this game showed how one day cricket is simply inferior to the nuances and intricacies of 4 day cricket at its best. To those who went I am glad you were rewarded with such a great match - Scarborough looks a wonderful place to watch cricket. Agree with other comments too - would try to keep Hardie - really held his nerve

I thought Foakes and Hardie had decided to play out the draw so gave up watching with about 60 left, shame, but I am so pleased with the performance of a severely weakened side. They were not perfect, McKerr in particular had a shocker, but they kept fighting. Damn good to win when you cede over 500 in the first innings.

There must be an odd approach to the wicket at Scarborough for bowlers judging by the no balls bowled.

Also noticed this below from Will Macpherson yesterday

Ben Foakes has been not out at the end of four successful chases for Surrey and England this season. Every chase he's had to bat in, he's been there at the end, and his team has won

48* (121) v Somerset; 32 (92) v NZ; 12 (15) v NZ; 42 (41) v Yorkshire

Just goes to show how valuable an asset he is when it comes to a run chase; I thought the game had gone at around the 14 over mark, but the way him and Hardie timed when to start taking Bess on was nothing short of excellent...

Best game of the season. Had everything you could possibly want. Great cricket, great venue (best away trip on the circuit) and great weather. You know when you get a 4 day game going into the final session with all 4 results possible it's the pinnacle of cricket. And we still didn't need a "specialist" spinner!

Never in doubt

what was all the panic about?

In all seriusness, a great win and great to see the video of the reaction of the players at the end. Next week v Essex is huge. May I suggest we dont produce a spinners wicket

Really do think the county championship needs promoting more. What a spectacle this was and the shifts and nuances really do need making more of. First Yorkshire scoring 500 - would think it impossible to lose from there - Surrey under pressure - Yorkshire even hopeful of forcing the follow on- by end of day 3 we look like a draw is most likely result yet by mid afternoon Surrey victory seems likely. Final session Yorkshire would have fancied their chances of victory and we even have a T20 style finish. Four days of cricket and all 3 outcomes realistically possible in the final session. Sorry to summarise what everyone already knows but surely such excellence is worthy of more coverage - 4 day cricket should be marketed so much better

You are right, it should be, but as it seems that the ECB dont want to know, who is going to do it

I agree about the wicket next week Coatesy.

Let’s hope Stewie has an overseas bowler up his sleeve
to back up Overton and Worrall. Gabriel played against us
so some of the West Indian boys are available.
Maybe Roachy to return??

I see England have only released Salt, Parkinson and Brook for finals day which suggests we wouldn’t have had any of the England boys had we got through (maybe Sam as he hasn’t played the ODIs.). Still, I think I’d have taken yesterdays win over York’s if given the choice.
